In most cases, a one off Flying Lesson does not require a medical check up provided you have no conditions which could be impacted during a flight. For instance, if you were pregnant, you wouldn't sign up for an Aerobatics Flight! If you have any concerns, you should always speak with your GP.
However, if you are committed to gaining a licence, the Civil Aviation Authority do recommend having a look at the medical requirements because you have to have a medical examination and certificate for a licence to be valid.
Essentially, if you are flying just for fun, as long as you're fit and healthy there's no need for a medical check-up, but if you're committing to a series of intensive lessons and hoping to get a PPL (private pilot licence) at the end, you'll want to look at the medical requirements first to see if you are fit to fly and will pass the medical examination needed.
These common concerns are usually okay to fly with:
- Vision - wearing glasses or contact lenses
- Asthma - you may need more tests if you are committing to the PPL
- Blood pressure - high blood pressure but managed with medication
As always, if you have any medical concerns it's always best to check with a professional before flying. Each experience will have information on the requirements to fly, so please read these thoroughly before booking.
